Bernice Lavonne (Gray) Summerfield was born September 18, 1931, to Thomas H. and Laura E. (Moore) Gray in Jordan Township, Monona County, Iowa. She was raised west of Dunlap and attended country school and Dunlap High School. Bernice married George Summerfield on February 5, 1949. The couple lived near Dunlap their entire married lives. Bernice worked at Elliott's Variety Store and Baker's IGA both in Dunlap, and Worldwide in Denison, then Moore Brothers and Smitty's Grocery Store both in Dunlap. George died on March 24, 1987.

Bernice was a member of the Congregational Church in Dunlap. She was known for her baking and candy ~ especially her world famous Aunt Bea's peanut brittle. She enjoyed volunteering at the school and the nursing home.

Bernice died on Wednesday, January 11, 2012, at her home in Dunlap, Iowa at the age of 80 years, three months, and 24 days.

Bernice was preceded in death by her parents; husband, George; granddaughter, Amy Summerfield; and four brothers, Cyril, Floyd, Lloyd, and Ervin Gray. She is survived by her eight children, Peggy (Dave) Tasich of Dunlap, IA, Mary Ann (Bill) Siglin of Denison, IA, Bob (Betty Briggs) Summerfield and Rod (Connie) Summerfield all of Dunlap, IA, Sue (Francis Cross) Summerfield of Neola, IA, Tom (Neva) Summerfield and Ken (Jodi) Summerfield all of Dunlap, IA, Jeff (LeAnn) Summerfield of Sloan, Iowa; 23 grandchildren; 27 great grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; four sisters, Irene Laubscher of Dunlap, IA, Darlene Chilton of Las Cruces, NM, Vera (Gary) Rosenberger of Carter Lake, IA, Jane (John) Miller of Dunlap, IA; brother, Jim (JoAnn) Gray of Dunlap, IA; three sisters-in-law, Opal Gray, Patsy Gray and Eleanor Summerfield all of Dunlap, IA; and many other relatives and friends.
