Gerald Nelson Lewis was born November 19, 1922, to James and Velma (Birks) Lewis near Dunlap, Iowa. He was raised near Woodbine, Iowa and attended country school and Woodbine High School. Jerry worked for farmers in the area and all the way to Minnesota. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy following the attack on Pearl Harbor. He served from January of 1942 to October of 1945. Jerry was a First Class Boatswain Mate on the USS Aylwin. Jerry married Myrna Waite on August 27, 1946. The couple farmed southeast of Woodbine. In 1968 they moved northeast of Woodbine and continued farming. Jerry farmed until 1968, when he went to work at the Woodbine Grain Elevator. He also worked for Preben Jensen from 1980 - 1984. Jerry retired from the elevator in 1990. Myrna died on December 31, 2008.

Jerry was a founding member of the Woodbine Saddle Club. He loved being in the parades and going to horse shows. He served as president on the Woodbine Saddle Club, School Board and Youth Center Board. He loved his horses and enjoyed taking part in the Woodbine Centennial in 1966. Jerry was also a member of the Woodbine Weiss American Legion Post #143.

Jerry died on Tuesday, January 24, 2017, at the Rose Vista Nursing Home in Woodbine at the age of 94 years, two months, and five days.

Jerry was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Myrna Lewis; two brothers, Clinton and Jerome Lewis; and sister Vivian Whitmore. He is survived by his two daughters, Barbara Lewis of Woodbine, Iowa, Karen Lewis of Henderson, Nevada; four grandchildren, Sara (Jeff) Anderson, Seth (Keri) Reynolds, Steven (Katie) Jensen and Brian (Angela Armstrong) Jensen; four great grandchildren, Jayden Gubbels, Sophie Jensen, Ethan and Ryan Anderson; sister, Elaine (James) Bruce of Palos Verdes Estate, California; and many other relatives and friends.
