Thomas Bernard Murphy was born on November 3, 1941, to Walter and Marguerite (Tierney) Murphy in Council Bluffs, Iowa. He was raised near Dunlap, Iowa, attended school, and graduated from St. Joseph's High School in Dunlap. He then served in the Iowa Army National Guard. On February 19, 1966, Tom married Maxine Quandt at the Catholic Church in Ida Grove, Iowa. The couple farmed and raised hogs to farrow. Tom also did custom hay baling, sold seed corn and beans and worked part-time at FSC in Denison. Tom and Maxine owned Murphy's Lunch Wagon and the Dunlap Dairy Sweet and Your Treasure Chest in Denison.

Tom was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church. He enjoyed being with his family and friends and helping his children with their 4-H projects. Tom was always ready to flip a quarter for a buck or a meal.

Tom died on Saturday, March 31, 2018, at the Dunlap Specialty Care at the age of 76 years, four months, and 28 days.
